The National Security Council (NSC) is the President's principal forum for considering national security and foreign policy matters with his senior national security advisors and cabinet officials. Since its inception under President Truman, the Council's function has been to advise and assist the President on national security. The Council also serves as the President's principal arm for coordinating these policies among various government agencies.(see more information)

Priorities after 9/11 :

The NCC is committed to securing the homeland against 21st century threats by preventing terrorist attacks and other threats against America , preparing and planning for emergencies, and investing in strong response and recovery capabilities.
National Security Council ensures that the Federal Government works with states and local governments, and the private sector as close partners in a national approach to prevention, mitigation, and response.
