(September 4, 2001- Present) was nominated by President George W. Bush and became the sixth Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on September 4, 2001.
Before 9/11 FBI had long favored its criminal justice over its national security mission and it also didnt have efficient methods of intelligence collecting as 9/11 showed. Needless to say, the demand for FBI criminal justice is still very high, but Sept 11, 2001 changed this state of matter. Experts describe the FBIs information system before 9/11 as woefully inadequate.
After 9/11: the FBI is trying to foresee the catastrophe by investigating the networks of extremists in the country with the help of communities and people of the US. For the 1st time the FBI proclaimed counterterrorism as their top priority. The diversity of homegrown extremists and the direct knowledge they have of the United States makes the threat they pose potentially very serious. Cyber war is also very important because terrorists are using Internet to paralyze the work of the government (banking, airport systems, etc) that can lead to a catastrophe. The USA PATRIOT Act has enabled many of the FBI's key post-9/11 improvements in counterterrorism, intelligence, and information sharing. This law has become the symbol of the American society after 9/11 and it serves to protect civil liberties.
Homeland Security act of 2002 gave the FBI new broad responsibilities. The major responsibility here is mapping terrorist threats to the homelandin order to drive our efforts to protect against terrorist threats.
In post-9/11 world FBI agents need a sustainable governmental support to become a stronger intelligence agency. What the Bureau needs is a shift towards counterterrorism at home.
